The University of Denver, commonly known as DU, is a co-educational four-year university in Denver, which is the capital and the most populated city in the US state of Colorado, having a population estimated at a number of more than 600 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census.
DU was founded in 1864, as the Colorado Seminary, by John Evans, former governor of Colorado Territory, appointed by President Abraham Lincoln, the school being founded in order to civilize the newly - created City of Denver (1858) that looked then more like a mining camp that a city, being officially renamed University of Denver, by 1880.
Today, DU is known as being the oldest private university in the Rocky Mountain Region, its main campus lying on 125 acres, just 7 miles south of downtown Denver. According to a 2010 article in the U.S. News & World Report, DU is 84th among all public and private "National Universities", and its undergraduate business program was ranked 67th best one, in a 2008 article, in BusinessWeek.
In 2009, the university had an enrollment of nearly 11 700 students, of which nearly 5 400 were undergraduates. DU is divided into 2 Divisions, 5 colleges, 6 schools and 5 institutes and centers, through which it offers its students degrees in various fields of study. The University of Denver is one of the few in the US that personally interviews every undergraduate applicant fact which points that DU is interested in the person, as well, and not just the applicant’s credentials.
The athletic teams from DU are known as the Denver Pioneers, who compete in the NCAA Division I, being best known for their achievements in winter sports, including skiing, in which the Pioneers have won 22 NCAA titles, more than any other school, having a total of 28 NCAA winnings, being in the top 10 of all NCAA schools (in terms of total titles).
